He graduated from Livingston Academy in 1983 and then attended Mid-America College of Funeral Service in Jeffersonville, Indiana where he graduated with a diploma in Mortuary Science in 1991. Jerry was urged to go to mortuary school by the late Willie Butler Upton of Celina. Mr. Upton even helped Jerry by signing the paperwork for him to go. Jerry continued working for Butler until his death, when he started working for Mr. Jim Briggs, Butler's son-in-law. He served his apprentice funeral director requirements at Alexander-Macon County Funeral Home in Lafayette, Tennessee and satisfied those requirements for his licensure as a funeral director and embalmer. He also holds a funeral director and embalmer license in the state of Kentucky. Jerry married Gina K. Brown on February 14, 1992. Jerry and Gina started a transport and embalming business in Livingston in 1995. Jerry contracted with several area funeral homes for embalming and transporting and gained valuable experience as well as building a reputation for quality work. Gina worked as a Funeral Director's assistant with the duties of filing permits, working with insurance claims, and assisting with the general day to day operations of the business. In 1998, Jerry and Gina decided to open a funeral Home for their friends in Rickman, Tennessee. They purchased an existing building and established what was the Rickman-Hall Funeral Home.
