Obituary

Mr. John Claude Houser was born in March 21, 1935 in Knoxville, Tennessee and passed from this life on April 5, 2019 in Knoxville, Tennessee at the age of 84. Services for Mr. John Claude Houser will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at 6:30 PM from the West End Church of Christ in Livingston, Tennessee. family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday April 9th starting at 2 PM until service time.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Claude Mack Houser and Ms. Lena (Roberts) Mayes and one brother Mr. Hillard Houser.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ann (Webb) Houser; a son, Mark Houser; a daughter Patty (Houser) Smith; a son-in-law Tim Smith; grandchildren, Matthan Houser and wife Stephanie; Airica (Smith) Puckett and husband Dr. L.G. Puckett IV; Brandon Smith and wife Kayla; and Hannah Houser, all of Overton County.

Great-grandchildren Luther Greene Puckett V, Mattison Blaise Houser, Huttson Drayke Houser; Aubrianna Berkley Puckett; Jett Warren Houser, John Crewe Puckett;; Beckett Knox Smith; and Kylie Brooke Smith, all of Overton County.

He is also survived by his brothers Don Mayes, Ronnie Mayes, Eddie Mayes and his sister Sandra (Mayes) Coker, all of Knoxville, Tennessee; and his aunt Faye Wilson of Maryville, Tennessee; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Houser loved his family, his church and his country.

A man of faith he served as an Elder in the Lord's church for over 30 years, most recently at the West End church of Christ in Livingston from 1998-2019.

He also served as a member of the Tennessee Bible College Board of Directors, beginning in 2002 and as Chairman from 2010 until his departure from this life.

He was born in Knoxville, Tennessee and spent his youth in Knox and Sevier Counties in Tennessee with the exception of living in Richmond, California during World War II, due to his father's occupation. After the family moved back to East Tennessee he moved to Detroit, Michigan and began working during the mid-1950's where he met a fellow Tennessean Anna Jean Webb. They were married October 12, 1957.

They started a family returned back to Tennessee by the end of the decade.

Mr. Houser started Maryville Bumper Exchange in 1961 and then moved the business to Livingston, Tennessee and renamed it Best Bumper Service in 1971. he owned and operated the business until 2000. He was also part owner of the Cookeville Auto Auction for many years and other businesses.

Mr. Houser led a Tax Revolt in Overton County in 1981 that was covered by statewide media and led to his election as Overton County Executive in 1982. a position he held until 1986. He has been very active in politics through the years and was named the Tennessee GOP Statesman of the Year for the 6 th Congressional District in 2015. He was also named the recipient of the Overton County Republican Party Reagan Award for lifetime achievement in 2016. He chaired local county re-election campaigns for Congressman Diane Black, Senators Lamar Alexander and Marsha Blackburn, Governor Bill Haslam and President Donald J. Trump. He also has served on the boards of the Upper Cumberland Development District; the Upper Cumberland Human Resource Agency; American Bank & Trust of the Cumberlands and others.

Simply put his lifetime passion was teaching others about the gospel of Jesus Christ. He was compassionate to those in need and without fanfare went about helping people.
